Training a horse to lope...need help?
Great Question! Many horses, or unfinished horses struggle to make their horses canter. My baby, is just getting started and I find that when I canter, I like to canter in a small circle cutting off half the ring. Horses can't gallop a circle. They can only canter a circle. When doing this, apply pressure with your inside leg and lift your inside rein. This will allow your horse to bend around a circle. If you are comfortable, you may use drawreins while cantering. This slows my horse down ALOT and i'm sure it would slow yours down to. Make sure when you are cantering, you are sitting back. Roll your tummy in and make sure your bum is against the back of the saddle. This will make for better transitions. If you are not experienced or have no experience with draw reins, please don't give them a try. They work! They can also be harmful in untrained hands. Make sure you are not squeezing your horse with your legs. If they need momentum to go, use you inside leg instead of your outside. My western pleasure mare will go faster with the outside leg, but when pressure is applied with the inside, she keeps going, but at the same rate! Hope you are your horse establish your lope :)
